Iowa's Texting Ban

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, over 106,000 licensed drivers were involved in traffic crashes in the year 2000. Of these, over 15,000 crashes involved young drivers, age 18 and under. In order to combat this problem, Iowa, along with several other states, recently passed laws limiting the use of cell phones while driving. Under the law, all drivers are banned from texting while driving.

In order to combat the high rate of accidents involving less experienced drivers, Iowa law provides for a much stricter ban for teenage drivers with a restricted license. For these license holders, the use of handheld electronic devices while driving is banned.
